Summer is almost here and that means the nation’s most delicious holiday is upon us. National Food Truck Day is a fun and flavorful way to support and celebrate small businesses by eating great food. On June 25th, local restaurants and big chains alike will line up to feed the masses in their custom-built food trucks

The History of National Food Truck Day

So who invented these deliciously convenient mobile restaurants anyway? Well, the history of food trucks is long and the idea is not new at all. Shortly after the Civil War, chuck wagons and pushcarts were used to serve meals to cowboys and workers in big cities.

Chuck wagons followed cowboys around so cooks could prepare a serve hot meals to them for dinner and lunch. Pushcarts weren’t used for cooking, but servers used them to feed quick meals to delivery boys, construction workers and other hardworking city-dwellers.

In the 1950s, ice cream trucks started cruising suburban streets, selling frozen treats to neighborhood children across the country and the food truck craze began. Once Americans caught the food truck bug, these mobile restaurants began popping up across the country. Over the last decade, food trucks have exploded in popularity and today, you can find a truck that serves just about any type of cuisine.

How You Can Participate

Each June, the US and Canada celebrate National Food Truck Day on the last Friday of the month, but the celebration usually lasts the entire week. With over 30,000 businesses participating, you’ll have no trouble finding a food truck that serves whatever food you’re craving.

Here’s how you can celebrate National Food Truck Day:

  1. Find a participating food truck in your city
  2. Post your food truck photos using #NationalFoodTruckDay
  3. Don’t forget to tag the truck!
  4. Tell your friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors!

Participating food trucks will be offering discounts and other fun incentives to their customers all week long. Take a day (or week) off from cooking and step up to the window of your favorite food truck during the week of June 20th to June 27th.

Support Local Businesses

This year, more than ever, is a year to celebrate small businesses for their resilience and hard work. National Food Truck Day provides the perfect opportunity to show up and support local business owners who have consistently brought fresh, delicious food to our communities and neighborhoods. It takes a lot of work to get all the permits, licenses and fees covered to deliver freshly cooked food each day. Show your appreciation for your local food truck owners by ordering dinner this June 25th.
