Food truck festivals provide an excellent opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy fun activities while promoting local businesses like food trucks.

The Southern California (SoCal) food truck festivals are a haven for food truck businesses. Statistics show that the average food truck generates about $25,000 in monthly sales. As a food truck owner, it’s crucial to ensure your truck meets required standards so you can take part in the food truck festivals.

With over 24 million people, the Southern California community is diverse, with no particular ethnic group as the majority. The diversity of the population promotes a blending of different cultures and cuisines, which makes the SoCal food truck festivals stand out from the rest.

Summer is almost here and that means the nation’s most delicious holiday is upon us. National Food Truck Day is a fun and flavorful way to support and celebrate small businesses by eating great food. On June 25th, local restaurants and big chains alike will line up to feed the masses in their custom-built food trucks

The History of National Food Truck Day

So who invented these deliciously convenient mobile restaurants anyway? Well, the history of food trucks is long and the idea is not new at all. Shortly after the Civil War, chuck wagons and pushcarts were used to serve meals to cowboys and workers in big cities.

Chuck wagons followed cowboys around so cooks could prepare a serve hot meals to them for dinner and lunch. Pushcarts weren’t used for cooking, but servers used them to feed quick meals to delivery boys, construction workers and other hardworking city-dwellers.

In the 1950s, ice cream trucks started cruising suburban streets, selling frozen treats to neighborhood children across the country and the food truck craze began. Once Americans caught the food truck bug, these mobile restaurants began popping up across the country. Over the last decade, food trucks have exploded in popularity and today, you can find a truck that serves just about any type of cuisine.

How You Can Participate

Each June, the US and Canada celebrate National Food Truck Day on the last Friday of the month, but the celebration usually lasts the entire week. With over 30,000 businesses participating, you’ll have no trouble finding a food truck that serves whatever food you’re craving.

Here’s how you can celebrate National Food Truck Day:

  1. Find a participating food truck in your city
  2. Post your food truck photos using #NationalFoodTruckDay
  3. Don’t forget to tag the truck!
  4. Tell your friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors!

Participating food trucks will be offering discounts and other fun incentives to their customers all week long. Take a day (or week) off from cooking and step up to the window of your favorite food truck during the week of June 20th to June 27th.

Support Local Businesses

This year, more than ever, is a year to celebrate small businesses for their resilience and hard work. National Food Truck Day provides the perfect opportunity to show up and support local business owners who have consistently brought fresh, delicious food to our communities and neighborhoods. It takes a lot of work to get all the permits, licenses and fees covered to deliver freshly cooked food each day. Show your appreciation for your local food truck owners by ordering dinner this June 25th.

Southern California has long been known for its award-winning festivals and fabulous dining options. Now, due to innovative food truck design and creative social distancing options, you won’t have to travel to five-star restaurants to seek out good eats; food trucks are bringing their menus practically to your doorstep. The line-up of amazing food truck events in SoCal this year is already making our mouths water.

FoodTrucks Aplenty in San Diego

While local breweries in San Diego always do their part to rotate through food trucks and offer you both a cold beverage and some tasty meals, there are bigger food truck events underway this season as well.

Curbside Lunch Break

There are weekly opportunities to grab some curbside bites downtown during your lunch break. Every Wednesday in Downtown San Diego the block on B St between India and Columbia is closed off for a lunch break food truck festival. Six gourmet San Diego food trucks are there weekly dishing out their specialties. Take a look at this food truck map to see which trucks will be there this week. After lunch, seek out San Diego’s top ten ice cream food trucks.

San Diego Taco and Beer Festival: July 10, 2021

The San Diego Taco & Beer Festival is returning with craft beer and complimentary taco tastings. Some top food trucks in SoCal will be attending to offering you their taco concoctions as well as selling additional food and beverage items. There will be live music and other vendors too. Coastal Cuisine in Del Mar

Just up the coast from San Diego’s food truck scene Del Mar is offering up their own festival this spring.

Del Mar Gourmet Food Truck Festival 2021: August TBD

Some of the best meals on wheels are promised to be at the Del Mar Gourmet Food Truck Festival this August. There should be a varied assortment of food trucks represented by some of SoCal’s top chefs, as well as food trucks coming in from across the US. In previous years, there have been items ranging from stuffed hamburgers to comfort food, creative desserts to lobster rolls. Keep checking back to see this year’s lineup.

Valley Center Events

Spring Arts, Crafts & Vintage Market in Valley Center: April 24-25, 2021

A quick drive out of the center of San Diego will bring you to Valley Center where you can enjoy their arts and crafts market this spring.  While shopping for their one-of-a-kind wares and handmade art, you will be able to enjoy multiple on-site food truck offerings.

Los Angeles and the Surrounding Area

Food Truck Fest at the Southern California Railway Museum, Perris: April 24, 2021

Take a tour “Behind the Scenes” of the SoCal Railway Museum and get access to places not typically open to the public, check out the rail cars, drive a real locomotive, and then dive into the food trucks on site. Tickets are $12 unless you happen to be a member of the museum, then it’s free.

Street Food Cinema

Dinner and a show? Street Food Cinema brings the best of both worlds with several locations in SoCal. You can watch a classic or newly released film while enjoying their nightly food truck lineups. Be sure to check their website for current food regulations in LA County to see what options will be available when you plan to attend.
